Become a Site Visitor
The Commission is always looking for volunteer site visitors. Our site visitors serve as the eyes and ears of the Commission, working to amplify, clarify, and verify the information provided by applicant birth centers.
What is a Site Visitor?
Site visitors are:
- Trained volunteers who conduct an on-site evaluation of each birth center that applies for accreditation.
- Professionals from a variety of backgrounds who are, or have been, directly involved in the operation of an accredited birth center.
- Practitioners, administrators, consulting specialists, or advisors.
When are the Site Visits?
- Site visits are typically held 4 times each year — the first weekend in February, May, August, and November.
- Site visits begin on Friday and end on Saturday, with the site visitors typically traveling Friday morning and Sunday morning.
- The Commission asks site visitors to participate in at least 1 site visit every 2 years.
When are the Site Visitor Trainings held?
- Our training workshop is held at the American Association of Birth Centers’ Annual Birth Institute, as well as other dates and locations as appropriate.
- The training typically takes about 4 hours, and there is no charge for the workshop.
- The Commission is currently developing a virtual training program to allow site visitors to complete the training remotely. Information will be posted on this site as the program becomes available.
- Please contact us if you would like to be notified of upcoming training sessions.
What does the Site Visitor Training cover?
The workshop covers all aspects of the accreditation process.
As a training participant, you will:
- Review birth center application materials
- Learn how to complete a chart review
- Review the steps involved in a typical site visit
- Learn how to handle any questions or concerns voiced by the applicant birth center
